I think the foremost quality – there's no success without it – is really loving what you do. If you love it, you do it well, and there's no success if you don't do well what you're working at.
– Malcolm Forbes

Carlton's father was instrumental in developing his interest in the stock market at an early age; Carlton purchased his first stock investment at age 8, which he still owns today. His fascination with the financial markets lead him to obtain a degree in finance and work in the industry immediately after college with Charles Schwab at its San Francisco, California headquarters.

Continuing his education, he completed the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ program, where he was introduced to significant aspects of helping clients reach their financial goals in addition to investment selection and management. Carlton recognizes that while clients work with his team to make money, it is also essential to provide affluent clients with customized distribution strategies as well as proper estate planning guidance. The discipline of estate planning stood out to him since all aspects of a client's situation must be considered, and this broader, more comprehensive view of delivering service to clients aligned with his conviction so deeply that he went back to school to earn a law degree.

After practicing law for a few years, he began to view the attorney-client relationship as having significant limitations. While appreciating the need for providing objective legal advice together with transactional types of services, such as preparing legal documents, he wanted to offer an approach that not only considered clients' all-encompassing needs, but offered ongoing guidance. Based on years of client feedback, he believed that affluent clients desired guidance on many different issues and, more importantly, were looking to receive direction from an advisor who always acted in their best interest.

In addition to practicing law, Carlton has benefited from many career experiences that have enhanced his ability to provide financial advice. Carlton worked for seven years with Genworth Financial supporting financial advisors with advanced case designs, and developing and enhancing insurance products such as annuities, life insurance and long-term care plans. He also was an estate planning specialist with Wachovia Securities for five years, where he prepared or consulted on hundreds of comprehensive financial plans for affluent clients and families throughout the country. These experiences proved to be a great training opportunity as they provided hands-on experience addressing a multitude of client and family issues. Finally, Carlton joined the team of Wood Asset Management in 2008, where he provides ongoing, thoughtful financial guidance within the context of a successful wealth management team.

Conscientious and humble, he believes working as a financial advisor is a great way to serve others because the value of a long-term relationship with an experienced advisor can make an enormous difference in the lives of clients. To prospective clients, Carlton would offer that working with the right partner can make all the difference between obtaining average results and achieving exceptional results for them and their families.

Carlton graduated with a juris doctor from the College of William & Mary's Marshall-Wythe School of Law. He also holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Virginia's McIntire School of Commerce. He earned his CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification in 1987 and has been an active member of the Virginia State Bar for more than 25 years. He has also served as the endowment committee chair for Discovery United Methodist Church.

Originally from Gretna, Virginia, he and his wife, Gina, call Glen Allen home. They have four children, twins Lindsay and Tory, Grayson and Mia. When not working with clients, Carlton enjoys reading nonfiction, playing tennis and spending time with his children.
