Doug Gates

Preserving and growing wealth for high-net worth individuals and institutions is the legacy of this financial practice, first established by Doug’s father, Bob, at Raymond James in 1982. Doug is the steward of that legacy today and continues to work with a number of clients whose history with the practice extends back into its earliest years.

Doug’s mission on behalf of his clients is to implement investment programs designed to balance their needs for long-term growth or income with the preservation of their principal, with a particular emphasis on providing a high-touch service experience. This requires time and personal attention but allows Doug and his team to help manage their clients’ wealth with a deep understanding of their needs and aspirations. 

Doug, like his father before him, places a high value on team stability and continuity – as is demonstrated by the fact that clients of the practice have been supported by the same group of four associates over the past 40 years: Doug’s father, Bob, who retired in 2005; Doug; and their assistants, Barbi Brown, who retired in 2021, and Julie De Armond.   

Prior to joining Raymond James in 1998, Doug served as a management and technology consultant with Accenture for 13 years, rising to the position of associate partner. While the technical aspects of this position differ from asset management, there are many core competencies that Doug still applies today – his attention to detail, customer service and the ability to embrace change and quickly adapt to an evolving marketplace.

Doug was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and moved to St. Petersburg with his family when he was one year old. He earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and management information systems from Boston University. Today, he lives in St. Petersburg’s Old Northeast neighborhood with his wife, Laura. He and his wife have two grown sons – a physician who resides in Ann Arbor, Michigan, and an IT professional who lives in Austin, Texas. In his free time, he enjoys fitness activities, travel, adventure travel and fine wine.
