Raymond James further expands Energy Investment Banking practice, hires veteran Energy banker Sonu Johl as Co-Head of E&P banking with Will Hodge

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. ─ Raymond James has expanded the capabilities of its Energy Investment Banking practice with the hiring of Sundip “Sonu” Johl as managing director and co-head of exploration & production (E&P) energy banking. Johl has advised E&P clients since 2009 on $40 billion of oil and gas industry transactions across a range of products including corporate mergers, acquisitions, divestitures, initial public offerings, inaugural bond issuance, private placements, acquisition financings and restructurings.

“Sonu is a highly regarded professional in E&P banking, known for his track record in helping clients achieve their desired outcomes on their most important strategic alternatives,” said Marshall Adkins, head of the Energy Investment Banking practice. “Paired with the recent addition of co-head Will Hodge, we believe Raymond James is building an E&P franchise that will give clients sound advice, and help them achieve their most important strategic objectives during a pivotal time in the industry.”

Johl, a second generation oilman, joins Raymond James from UBS, where he was a managing director in the global energy group focused on US SMID Cap E&P client coverage. Prior to UBS, he spent nine years in the global energy group at Citi Investment Banking in Houston, Sydney and New York. Johl has advised public, private and sponsor-backed companies on a variety of E&P related transactions during his tenure. He attended San Jose State University, where he was an NCAA Division I athlete in football, and obtained his MBA from the Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia.

“We are very excited to have Sonu join the Energy Investment Banking group as co-head of the E&P practice during an unprecedented time in the energy industry,” said Jim Bunn, president of Global Equities and Investment Banking at Raymond James. “He, along with Will Hodge, will be able to leverage the breadth and depth of the Raymond James platform, including its capital markets, advisory and research expertise, to deliver outstanding client-focused results in an industry that we believe will rebound strongly in the next few years.”

Johl is based in Houston.
