A Few of the Finer Things - February 2016

One of the many great things about living in the Phoenix metropolitan area is that we have a lot of wonderful Mexican restaurants. My family’s favorite old-school, authentic Mexican restaurant is La Fonda del Sol in the Windmill Plaza at the southeast corner of Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard.

La Fonda has been around for over 25 years and I cannot recommend it highly enough. It is a true “hole-in-the-wall” type of place-in a strip mall between several other restaurants, bike shops and other businesses that have been in the center for over 20 years as well. When you enter you are always greeted very warmly and as soon as you sit down you are presented with a warm bowl of chips and their homemade salsa plus their homemade hot sauce-I highly recommend mixing the two! The chips are bottomless and delicious…my three youngest sons and I took down four bowls last weekend when we visited for dinner. The classic menu items are all terrific-I am partial to the #9 which is two beef or chicken tacos with beans and rice-simple yet delicious! The margaritas are wonderful, the beer is always cold and the service is always friendly and efficient, no matter how busy they are.

I have sent friends from out of town to La Fonda when asked for a local restaurant recommendation and every time I have done so people have thoroughly enjoyed it. They do have a website (La Fonda Del Sol) but in true old-school fashion it states that “La Fonda has no email address, please phone!” Give it a try if you have never been…I assure you will have a “comida muy fina!”
