A Few of the Finer Things - March 2015
Recently my wife, Debbie, and I once again went through a liberating yet terrifying experience…our daughter, Abrie, is now 16 and got her driver's license. While it is "liberating" that she can now drive herself to tennis lessons, youth group events and her other activities, as many of you with adult children can attest to, it is "terrifying" that we are placing her behind the wheel of a 4,000-pound machine that can not only hurt her if she is not properly prepared but can hurt countless others as well. Thanks to the Driving MBA driving school, we feel much more comfortable that she is well prepared for her responsibility to be a safe, defensive driver.
This was our second child to go through Driving MBA and I cannot stress enough how impressed we were with everything about the program. It is not cheap—the D.R.I.V.E. Certification Package that we purchased was over $1,400. However, Debbie and I felt that it was truly an incredible value. As their website says, "If cost is the only factor that you are basing your decision on, then we are not the school for you. You must remember that at the end of the day, this is your child. Consider the costs of insurance, hospitalization and long-term care, or worst of all, funeral costs." Dramatic, indeed, but also very true…Debbie and I agreed that the benefits greatly exceeded the monetary cost.
One of my favorite stories about Driving MBA is that I picked our older son, Jonah, up from a lesson one day and as was our custom, he drove home as he had his learner's permit at the time. We were a block away from the Driving MBA building when he commented, "I keep waiting for a taxi or a kid to dart out in front of me," as he had just had a session on the advanced simulator that tested his alertness and reaction time. Another of my favorite lessons that they do is that they make the student send a text message while driving on the simulator and they then see what happened while they were distracted (most swerve off the road and it is a great deterrent).
The instructors at Driving MBA are top notch and as Abrie says, "I can't imagine not going through this class and being prepared to be a safe driver." If you have a child approaching 15 ½, I strongly recommend checking out what Driving MBA has to offer. If you have a grandchild approaching 15 ½, there is an opportunity for a very worthwhile gift that I'm sure will be very appreciated by both the recipient as well as the parents!
