LEAPING ACROSS OBSTACLES in retirement
Elizabeth, a 67-year-old retiree, was having a difficult time. Her husband had recently passed away, and their shared dreams for their ideal retirement together seemed lost. All of this was clouding her ability to make rational decisions and move forward with her life.
She had received a large life insurance check that she was seeking advice on what to do with, and wanted to ensure that her assets would allow her to maintain her lifestyle. In addition, at the time of her husband’s death she had been in the process of planning to open a therapeutic riding center, which was now on hold. It had long been her dream to create a safe space for horses and people to bond.
First, we would advise Elizabeth to hold off on making big financial decisions until she felt ready. Grief can cloud your senses and make it difficult to think about the future. Once she was in a better place, we would thoroughly analyze her situation, taking stock of assets like the life insurance proceeds. The next step is developing a detailed retirement income plan that addresses both needs and desires – including her dream of opening the riding center.
We want her to feel confident about having the money to maintain her lifestyle in retirement, while living out her vision for the future.
