Managing wealth not only actively, but proactively

Our clients demand high standards and want a financial professional who delves deeper and works harder to select their investments and customize their portfolios. Measureable benefits can come from investing the time in research and due diligence. There are no shortcuts. The markets never stand still, and as a result, neither do we.

Certificates of Deposit offer FDIC insurance and a fixed rate of return while both principal and yield of investment securities will fluctuate with changes in market conditions. Investing always involves risk and you may incur a profit or loss. No investment strategy can guarantee success.

Covered calls

Covered call writers are obligated to sell shares at the strike price if assigned, which limits possible gains and may result in a taxable gain for the option writer. This strategy does not usually provide protection from significant downward price movements and the covered call writer will not participate in any appreciation of the underlying stock above the strike price.

I believe one of the most underutilized strategies by individual investors may be the “covered call option.” For our clients who own individual stock positions as part of their overall wealth management plan, we encourage having the ability to write a covered call against their stock position, under the right circumstances. A covered call option produces income, modestly hedges against a potential price drop in the stock but may also limit the potential upside of the stock. Options involve risk and are not suitable for all investors. When appropriate, options should comprise a modest portion of an investor's portfolio. Prior to buying or selling an option, a person must receive a copy of “Characteristics and Risks of Standardized Options” (ODD). Copies of the ODD are available from your financial advisor, from cboedirect.com/Resources/Intro.aspx or by contacting Raymond James at 880 Carillon Parkway, St. Petersburg, FL 33716.
