Our family history of service

When Bernard “Bernie” Cohen started his practice as an investment advisor in New York City in 1966, the idea of personalized portfolios and financial planning was still novel to many. What if “the right stock” wasn’t actually universal? What if each investors’ goals, timelines, life circumstances and tolerances for risk changed the rubric for measuring a successful portfolio? Bernie knew they did, so with that philosophy, he created a practice where service, personalized investing and durable relationships with his clients were touchstones. This led to his success – and inspired his son.

After working with a number of prestigious firms through the highs and lows of the tumultuous ‘70s and ‘80s, Bernie eventually moved his practice to Boca Raton, Florida, where he continued to serve clients and their families who increasingly spanned the nation.

Then, in 1988, Jonathan Cohen graduated from George Washington University and was selected to join the highly competitive investment advisor training program at Drexel Burnham, his father’s firm at the time. Three years later, Jon moved south to hang his shingle alongside his father’s, making the practice a multigenerational family business.

The dynamic father and son advisor team continued to thrive and grow. In 2002, the team moved from Boca Raton to North Palm Beach and Jon was named a branch manager within their firm. Then, in 2006, the duo decided to affiliate their practice with Morgan Keegan, a rapidly ascendent financial services and wealth management firm.

In 2011, Jon was first recognized as a member of the firm’s Chairman’s Club. When Raymond James acquired Morgan Keegan in 2012, the team moved with it, and Jon has been named a member of the Raymond James Chairman’s Council* each year since.

As the practice continued to serve its clients with distinction, its family lineage has grown. In 2018, Gisella Cohen, Jon’s wife, joined the practice as a marketing associate. And in 2023, Camille Marchesani, Jon’s oldest daughter, joined the industry and the practice as a client service associate, turning Cohen & Son into a three-generation family business.

Through these decades and across generations, we believe our success has been owed entirely to our commitment to our clients – and their trust in us.
