Two Bingeworthy Financial Shows
There is no shortage of quality content available on the various streaming services and I have two shows/series to recommend: 1) Super Pumped: The Battle for Uber and 2) WeCrashed.
Super Pumped (available on Showtime Anytime) tells the story of the founder of Uber along with the primary venture capitalists. Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Kyle Chandler and Uma Thurman headline a strong cast. The story takes you back to Uber’s beginnings as a “Black Car” company in San Francisco and highlights the struggles and pains that a rapidly growing “disruptor” company faces in the early stages of its life cycle. It is seven episodes (under an hour each) and is thrilling entertainment. No spoilers here…it is fascinating to watch and reflect back on times not so long ago.
WeCrashed (available on Apple TV+) tells the story of the startup, WeWork. It stars Jared Leto, Anne Hathaway and Anthony Edwards (I did not recognize him!). There are eight roughly one hour episodes and it is also a rather entertaining series. I remember the hype of WeWork very vividly as it was one of the more talked about “unicorn” investments of recent years. WeWork spaces were rapidly appearing in a vast array of urban areas from 2015 to 2019. You could even find a WeWork in Tempe, just off the AZ-202 freeway. The series is a wild look into the boom and bust of startups, their founders and their funders.
Both of these are enjoyable viewing options for couples and young adults. All can enjoy a little education (however dramatized) on the startup/venture capital/private equity worlds.
