La Rioja Alta - Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva 2015

“Deep magenta. An intensely perfumed bouquet evokes ripe black raspberry, cherry cola, potpourri, tobacco and exotic spices, plus a smoky mineral flourish. Sweet and broad in the mouth, offering lush red and blue fruit, spicecake, mocha and coconut flavors that firm up on the back half. Finishes extremely long and spicy, with resonating florality, gently chewy tannins and lingering oak spice notes.”

*About the reviewer: Antonio Galloni – Founder
Antonio Galloni’s career as one of the most trusted and respected wine critics in the world spans over a decade. In 2004, while a graduate student at MIT, Antonio founded Piedmont Report, the first in-depth, English language journal solely focused on Italian wine. Antonio's success led him to Robert Parker and The Wine Advocate where he became the lead critic and covered the wines of California, Italy, Burgundy and Champagne. At TWA Antonio spearheaded the production of video content, developed numerous public events and seminars such as his highly anticipated “La Festa del Barolo,” and ran numerous charitable events. Vinous is the continuation of a vision for a contemporary wine media platform first conceived by Antonio with Piedmont Report in 2004.

*About Calvert Woodley Wines & Spirits in Washington, DC

Calvert Woodley opened its doors in 1982 after the merger of two competitors, Calvert Liquors and Woodley Wine & Liquor. The original two owners, Aaron Bernstein and Ed Sands, retired in 2014 and 2019, respectively, and the store is now owned by Michael Sands, son of Ed. We pride ourselves on personal, knowledgeable customer service, fantastic selection and hard-to-beat prices.

Dating back to 1949, Calvert Liquors was located on Wisconsin Avenue in the Glover Park neighborhood. Woodley Wine & Liquor, created in 1966, was in the Cleveland Park strip across from the Uptown Theater. When the opportunity arose for Aaron Bernstein of Calvert to join forces with Ed Sands of Woodley, the two jumped at the chance and moved to our current location in the Van Ness/UDC neighborhood at the corner of Connecticut Ave and Windom.

Each store brought its strengths to help Calvert Woodley thrive. From Calvert came, among other things, La Cheeserie & International Deli and from Woodley came the Direct Importing of Bordeaux that has helped make our wine department the power it is today. Woodley began selling Bordeaux Futures with the 1966 vintage!

To help serve you as best we can we have about 50 employees. We're proud of the fact that four original employees from the opening in 1982 are still with us at CW today, with another six people having 25+ years under their belt. Among them is Carlos Estrada, who runs our La Cheeserie and is surely one of the most outstanding cheese merchants in the United States, and Tom McKnew, our Wine Manager who started at Woodley Wine & Liquor in 1980! With 40 other hard-working employees, Calvert Woodley is poised to excel for years to come.

Visit us and see why we're the Number One wine and spirit shop in DC and one of the best in the country!
