In Tibetan, Sherpa means "eastern people"; this referred to a particular group of people who reside in the mountainous region of Nepal and the Himalayas.
Sherpas are known for their hardiness, expertise, experience, and their unique skill at mountaineering and negotiating difficult terrain, in particular climbing Mount Everest. Due to their specific skills and temperament Sherpas were highly sought after as guides and advisors for those interested in undertaking the difficult climb up the mountain.
