About Lightship Capital Management
The Lightship
The history of the lightship begins more than two centuries ago, tracing its origin to Roman coast guard galleys that carried an open framework basket at the top of the masthead, in which a fire was built to provide guidance for ships returning home. By the 18th century, maritime commerce had become a 24-hour-a-day undertaking, with shipping commerce spanning the globe. Similar vessels soon entered service off the coast of most seafaring nations to provide a continuous signal for safe passage of ships. The lightship was often subject to inclement weather and raging storms, but its sailors worked diligently throughout to keep their message aglow.
America’s first true lightship entered service off Sandy Hook, New Jersey, in 1823. The lightship proved as successful on this side of the Atlantic as it had on the other. From 1820-1983, at one time or another, 116 lightships were stationed throughout the United States. The ships became known by the names of their stations, such as the famous Vineyard Lightship pictured here. Ships’ captains and owners considered the lightship a godsend providing crucial guidance to their most valuable assets.
