Our Approach

Customizing a portfolio to reflect your needs is paramount. It’s also obvious. When we speak of needs, we are typically referring to the need for cash to meet some sort of expenditure, whether recurring or otherwise. Your need for current and/or future cash flows along with your general attitude around risk will be reflected in your recommended asset mix. Our process is designed to uncover, qualify and quantify those needs, taking into consideration the foreseeable circumstances that may affect you and your family. We will also address those non-market related items that have potential to affect your net worth along with your legacy and charitable interests, all with a close eye to minimize taxes.

A truly customized approach also takes into account the type of investor you are. This may not be as obvious. It means identifying your preferences around different investment vehicles, weighing out the advantages and disadvantages of each. For example, do you prefer individual securities, ETFs, mutual funds or SMAs? We take the time to educate you to whatever level you’d like.  Do you have a preference toward dividends or other alternative income producing investments?  We will spend the time to ensure that you have a solid understanding of the risk and return profile of any potential strategy.

It’s also appropriate to address the type of relationship you’d like with your investment counselor. Would you prefer a nondiscretionary relationship whereby all investment decisions are presented to you before execution, or would you rather a discretionary relationship? What is your expectation and preference regarding the frequency and medium of communication from us?

Lastly, what is your investment philosophy? We draw a distinction between a statistical approach to asset management and an artistic approach. There is no right or wrong answer. We will help you articulate your investment philosophy and execute accordingly. Your investments should always reflect your needs, and they should also reflect your preferences, and the type of investor you want to be. Please watch the video below regarding investment philosophy.
