Kansas City, Tampa Bay via for the Championship at Raymond James Stadium

When Kansas City and Tampa Bay face off in professional football’s annual championship game on Sunday, February 7, Raymond James Stadium will be in sharp focus in millions of households. The stadium, named for Raymond James Financial when it opened in 1998, is located only 13 miles from the firm’s international headquarters.

Even if you’re not a dedicated football fan, between now and the official face off, you’ll likely see or hear the name of Raymond James Stadium referred to frequently in print or broadcast news. After such a challenging year, I thought you might enjoy a more light-hearted update on our stadium in advance of one of the most-watched annual U.S. sports events.

This year will be the third time that the biggest game in football is played at Raymond James Stadium since it first broke ground in 1996. Since opening, the stadium has seen its fair share of triumphs, upsets and renovations, but remains a fan favorite for its iconic 103-foot-long replica of an early-1880s pirate ship and an animatronic parrot that chats away to fellow fans as they pass by.

There’s no telling ahead of the kickoff whether Tampa’s big match up will produce a squeaker like the 1991 showdown or a blowout like in 1984. However, investors who pay attention to market trivia will probably be wondering about the tongue-in-cheek indicator that suggests market prices will rise over the course of the year depending which conference’s team comes out on top.

Of course, it’s just a fun theory and there is obviously no real connection between the big game and the stock market, so I strongly suggest limiting your predictions this year to the winner’s sports drink color or the length of the national anthem!
