Doctor Retirement Age Survey

Last quarter we spoke on financial confidence, and what factors make 80% of retired physicians feel satisfied with their retirement.

Age at Retirement was the first factor of importance mentioned by AMA Insurance in their survey.

  • 366 of the 1,202 surveyed retired between 60-65
  • 373 of the 1,202 surveyed retired between 66-70
  • Retirees in their 60s accounted for 61% of individuals surveyed (739 of 1,202).
  • Of those 739 individuals, 84% responded that they were satisfied or very satisfied in retirement.
    • All other retirement ages averaged 76% being satisfied at retirement age.

Why might a retired physician be more satisfied retiring in their 60s as opposed to their 50s or 70+?

  • Freedom to do as they wish, while physically being able to?
  • Gratification of a successful and complete career?
  • Financial Freedom?

All of those examples pose great reasons as to why someone is truly happy in retirement. Crossing the “retirement” finish line can be rewarding and gratifying on many levels: professionally, personally and financially.

Knowing you have a plan in place to guide you through everything retirement has to offer is a separate, equally satisfying feeling.
