College Legal Documents Needed

Medical Power of Attorney

Congratulations to the Class of 2020! Do you have a student going off to college or already living away at school? They need some legal documents in place.  Summer is a good time to get the paperwork lined up for:

  • 529 Plan—College expenses paid through this account can potentially be a tax write off
  • Living Will—End of Life Directives
  • Medical Power of Attorney--If your child becomes incapacitated, you can make medical decisions on their behalf
  • HIPAA form-- Allows you to get updates on your child’s medical condition
  • General Durable Power of Attorney-- This allows another person (parents) to make financial and legal decisions and transactions on the student’s behalf, such as
    • Breaking a lease
    • Applying for government benefits
    • Filing taxes
    • Paying Bills
    • Managing bank accounts
