6 Stages of Retirement
A few days ago, had dinner with a friend and I asked him, what are you going to do in retirement and he couldn’t answer the question.
My name is Derrick Glencer and I am a Certified Financial Planner Practitioner™ with Raymond James and I define, plan and make it happen financially speaking for families and individuals looking for a more meaningful relationship with their financial advisor. Today we are going to discuss the 6 phases of retirement.
It’s funny that when it comes to retirement we tend to put a lot of energy into saving money, and that’s important, But we also need to be prepared mentally and emotionally for what happens after we stop going to work everyday.
So what are those 6 stages and what should we do and expect in each stage.
We start in The planning phase-Your entire career is spent saving and planning for retirement but how much time have you spent considering what life will look like 20 to 40 years from now. Also and more importantly make sure you take some time to consider the realities of life without work.
Hopefully we all get to The big day-This is a celebration and rite of passage, It’s both a death and a rebirth. You are saying goodbye to a distinguished career and marking the beginning of a new phase in your life. Be sure to Mourn the loss and celebrate the journey that lies ahead.
Which of course leads us to
The honeymoon phase- After all the parties, you begin your new life, you travel, spend time with family and create new routines. However, just as the name states, honeymoons don’t last forever.
Once the emotional high wears off, you may start feeling bored or disillusioned, like “is this it?” You are now in the Disenchantment Phase.
You may even feel removed from the people and responsibilities that used to occupy your days, not to mention the uncomfortable feeling you get when you have to spend your savings.
Fortunately, disenchantment doesn’t last forever. Shortly you will begin……
Readjusting (which is the next phase)-You have time to create a new identity. Focus on learning to adjust to your new circumstances, especially if you and your partner are getting used to spending more time together and eventually you will begin to
Move on- Here is where you settle into a new routine, on your terms. Start a new hobby, Plan and take a trip you have always wanted, volunteer or spend more time with family and friends. Pursue things that will enrich you.
No matter which stage of retirement you’re entering, believe it or not a Financial Advisor can help!
