Wealth and Wisdom: Week of July 17, 2023
Repeat after me: “Inflation is still showing signs of easing, but not fast enough for the Fed.” That phrase has become a recurring theme in recent months, as each month brings news that the post-pandemic surge in rising prices is lessening – followed by proclamations from the Federal Reserve that there is still work to be done.
The work, of course, refers to the Fed’s campaign to hike interest rates enough to cool the fires of economic growth without putting them out. There have been 10 interest rate hikes so far, and financial markets have priced in at least one or two more at about the time when earlier forecasts had the Fed cutting rates to forestall a recession that has yet to materialize.
