Kim and I visited South Africa in February. It ranked as one of our all-time favorite trips. We were able to combine golfing and safari, and a couple of wine tasting tours, which provided a diverse and unforgettable experience. We travelled from Johannesburg to George to Cape Town to Kruger National Park. South Africa is renowned for its stunning landscapes, rich wildlife, and world-class golf courses…and it didn’t let us down.
The golf courses were impressive with gorgeous views and challenging layouts. We played Montague, The Links, Pinnacle Point, Pearl Valley, Steenberg, and Skukuza. Our favorite playing course was The Links, but our favorite views were at Pinnacle Point.
South Africa is becoming known for their wines. Although Kim and I are not wine connoisseurs, we did enjoy the opportunity to see what they had to offer. They are most famous for their red wine called Pinotage.
We spent three days in Cape Town. We took the tram up Table Top Mountain and had awesome views; we drove along Chapman Drive to see luxurious condos and homes; we went to see the African penguins (yes, there is such a thing); we took a sunset sailing cruise; and we toured their botanical gardens. We also spent a great deal of time in their waterfront district which had wonderful shops and restaurants.
Then it was onto the final leg of the trip to safari in Kruger National Park. We were able to see and capture pictures of the Big 5 – elephant, lion, rhino, water buffalo, and the elusive but finally found leopard. Of course we witnessed much more wildlife including hyena, wild dog, zebra, giraffe, baboons, lots of interesting birds, and so much more.
We certainly can’t share the hundreds of pictures we took, but we are attaching just a couple.
If you are inclined to do international travel, we would highly recommend that you put South Africa on your list. The country is welcoming, clean, and at the time of this writing, very cheap compared to our dollar.
