Episode #30

Is Stakeholder Capitalism Actually Unethical with Dr. Samuel Gregg

09.29.2023

This week Drew and Samuel Gregg from the American Institute for Economic Research (D. Phil. in moral philosophy and political economy from Oxford University) talk about how Stakeholder Capitalism is upending 250 years of Corporate Law in the United States, and how it is a sharp departure from the long accepted Shareholder Capitalist model. Stakeholderism claims the moral high ground but does it actually breed cronyism, corporatism, and corruption, and does profit maximization paradoxically orient economic actors towards virtuous behavior in the long run? They talk at length about what it means to be an ethical actor in the workplace and how many Americans view work as a necessary evil instead of an inherently good vocational calling. In the final section of this two part interview, they talk about his vision for America to return to her founding roots as a Commercial Republic.
